Get to Know Karen Mandell RYT 500

Karen has been with us since the spring of 2014. She’s been practicing yoga since 1998 as a means to escape her fast paced life as a fashion executive in New York City. But being just a student of yoga wasn’t enough. She was called to teaching and received her 200-hr certification from the Bright Spirit Teacher Training program at Devotion Yoga in Hoboken and later received her 300-hr training at ISHTA Yoga in NYC with Alan Finger. She also received her Advanced Restorative and Therapeutics Yoga training with Jillian Pransky at YogaWorks, NYC and her Yin Yoga training with Ulrica Norberg at ISHTA Yoga NYC.

Through personal experience she understands the wisdom of combining 12 step recovery with Yoga asana, prananyama and meditation. She was blessed with the opportunity to train with Durga Leela, the founder of the Yoga of Recovery (YoR) program and Swami Sitaramananda at Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Ashram.

Currently Karen teaches @ Yoga in the Heights on Monday and Wednesday mornings at 9:30am and Saturday at 11:00am. Karen also teaches a Sweat & Samadhi class everyother Friday at 7:00pm.

In January 2015, she is holding an Introduction to Yin Yoga. She also plans to start a Yoga for Recovery class in 2015 @ YITH as well!

We asked Karen to share a little about herself with us.. Here’s what she had to say…

3. What three words best describe your personality?
Energetic, positive, nurturing

4. What is your favorite yoga pose and why?
Warrior III because it makes me feel like a superhero!

5. What style do you teach?
Vinyasa, Yin Yoga and Restorative

6. Describe your perfect day.
Morning yoga practice, breakfast with my son Max, doing something outdoors (beach, hike) an afternoon nap, cooking dinner for friends/family, going to bed feeling content , loved and grateful!

7. 5 items you would have if you were stranded on a desert island?
An ipod with unlimited power and all my favorite music, yoga mat, unlimited clean water, a journal and a pen.

8. How many tattoos do you have?
Five

9. What is your favorite book?
The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle

10. Who’s your role model and why?
Oprah Winfrey. Because she is a strong and spirited woman who created her own destiny and shares her experience and wisdom with others in what she does.

14. What goal do you most want to accomplish in your lifetime?
To live an authentic life that is a giving to others and makes me feel content at the end of the day and to raise my son to be the man he is meant to be.
