Adios Summer! We’ve had a great run these past few months — enjoying the plethora of activity, the joyous days and social nights, the (sometimes overly sweltering) heat and nourishing sun. Now we get to slow down and enjoy the fruits of our combined labor. The sunlight is starting to wane, a golden yellow hue bathes our late afternoon surroundings and the energy in the environment around us is starting to mellow as the onset of autumn is in the not-so-distant horizon.
This transitional period between seasons (particularly between late Summer and early Fall) is associated with the Earth element in Chinese Medicine. This is the energy of abundance, of unity and of balance. Earth is centeredness and associated with digestion and transformation.
After we’ve spent the spring months sowing our seeds (figuratively and literally) and the summer months blossoming and blooming, we have now reached the peak of maturation and must harvest all the goodness we’ve accumulated, assimilate it and transform it all into something that will last us through the upcoming months of autumn and winter. And I’m not talking just about food…. I mean everything we are exposed to and take in from the food we eat, the air we breathe, what we watch on TV, the things we listen to…we are digesting everything around us and assimilating and transforming everything into every aspect of our being: physical, sensory, mental, intellectual and spiritual. There is a lot going on this time of year!
This transition between seasons often evokes a bit of chaotic energy as things change and transform inside us and around us. We flow from this highly energetic and warm season related to the FIRE element to a season of EARTH, when we need to start assimilating all that we have and acknowledge that we are slowly descending towards winter …a period self reflection and dormancy. This is not always an easy time of year. These seasonal transitions are when illnesses tend to set in; ailments that we thought subsided peekaboo their way into our consciousness again and the stresses of the upcoming holiday seasons start to creep back upon us. This is a prime time to tune up your body with acupuncture…to help you glide into autumn with ease and to help you maintain optimal health and keep digestion chugging right along.
Auricular acupuncture is a great way to experience the benefits of acupuncture, especially during seasonal transitions like early fall! Auricular acupuncture uses the ear to release stress, detoxify, and treat conditions anywhere in the body, including digestive issues and general stress (who doesn’t need a little stress-relief!) By stimulating points on the ear, the acupuncture needles send electrical impulse messages to the brain, which then stimulate targeted body areas. Stimulation of these points are very effective in alleviating pain and other symptoms.
So stop on in next month for a beneficial, immune boosting, stress reducing community-style acupuncture session. If you are new to acupuncture, this is a great way to be introduced to the medicine and if you are already an acupuncture patient, its a great pick-me-up in between private sessions.
