30 Day Yoga Challenge

It’s day one. I’m home.

Signing up for the 20 in 30 challenge at Yoga in the Heights was an easy, if not impulsive, decision. Like almost nothing else in my life, yoga has been a consistent source of strength and solace.

Fifteen years ago, when I was a college student in Buffalo, New York, my first yoga classes calmed my insecurities and helped me build a sense of self.

As a graduate student and a bartender, I spent much of my day pretending to be smarter, nicer, sexier, and happier than I felt. Yoga brought me back to authenticity.

Through divorce, a traumatic pregnancy, and the longest nineteen days of my life when my firstborn stayed in the hospital without me, yoga pushed me find my breath when I didn’t believe I could stand on my own.

And today, on the day that my smallest child begins a full-time summer camp leading into a regular school year schedule, I am officially shifting identities again. No longer a daytime mom, possibilities exploding like thoughts I can’t quiet, I find myself back on the mat. I lean into straight arms and lunging legs like power, like independence, like statuesque excitement that begins a new journey.

It’s day one. I’m so happy to be home.
